Burn Care Foundation organized Training program on Burns

Burn Care Foundation, a social unit of NEMCARE Hospital, Guwahati, organized a Training Program on Essential Burn Care on 8th and 9th May 2014 at Hotel Grand Starline, G S Road, Guwahati. The training program was organized in collaboration with Interburns (International Network on Training, Education and Research in Burns) and was participated by 57 numbers of doctors, Nurse and paramedics from different part of the North Eastern states. Dr. Tom Potokar, Plastic and Burn Surgeon and Director of Interburns from Wales, UK was the leading faculty in the training program. Besides him, Dr. Sunil M Keswani, Plastic and Burn Surgeon and Dr. Vandana Keswani, Burn Anesthesiologist from National Burn Centre, New Mumbai, Dr. Rajeswari Dharmarajan, Burn Surgeon from St. Johnís Hsopital, Bengaluru, Dr. Bhupendra Prasad Sarma, Sr Consultant Surgeon (Burns) and Convener of Burn Care Foundation, Dr. Seemarekha Devi, Prof & Head of Plastic Surgery, Guwahati Medical College and Dr. Nareswar Sarma, Sr. Consultant Surgeon, NEMCARE Hospital were the other faculties involved in the Training Program.

The Training Program was inaugurated on 8th May by Dr U.C.Sarma, Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Shankardev University of Health Sciences and the Souvenir of the Program was released by Dr. Kabul Saikia, Principal, Guwahati Medical College. The whole day training program thereafter dealt with the methods of essential burn care, which can be applied at the peripheral hospitals with limited resources. In the evening a seminar on Advances in Burns Management was held and it was inaugurated by Sri Swapnanil Baruah, Commissioner of Health, Government of Assam. He lauded the effort of the Burn Care Foundation in organizing such an event with international collaboration. Dr. Hitesh Baruah, Secretary Burn Care Foundation welcomed the dignitaries and the participants in the seminar. In the seminar, Dr Tom Potokar presented the present scenario of management of serious burn injured patients in United Kingdom. Dr. Sunil M Keswani gave a vivid presentation on present and future prospect of Skin Bank and Dr. Bhupendra Prasad Sarma presented about the development of burn care in Assam in last four decades. On 9th may, Training of Trainers course was conducted. The course was designed to develop future trainers on burn care for the region. There was enthusiastic participation of 35 doctor, nurses and paramedics from the region. Dr. Bhupendra Prasad Sarma presented comprehensive details of burns management with video presentation on dressing technique, Early Excision and Grafting and also on Burn Prevention during Diwali.

Burn Care Foundation has now formally collaborated with Interburns with a view to developing burn care in this part of the country. To further the cause, Burn Care Foundation signed an agreement for partnership for Training and development of Burn Care in the North Eastern States of India on 9th May 2014 at NEMCARE Hospital and agreed to work hand in hand for the cause. It will also not be out of place to mention that Burn Care Foundation has already been recognized by World Health Organization for feeding of data on burns to develop a World Burn Registry.
